Since the first implementation of the EMV global standard for secure payments, the number of chip and PIN terminals that are in use in the United Kingdom has expanded rapidly.
The technology was introduced as a joint venture between Europay, Mastercard and Visa (hence EMV) to better security when authenticating credit and debit card transactions, thus helping to reduce card fraud.
It works through a microchip within the card itself; this chip is twinned with a unique number or passcode, known as a Personal Identification Number (or PIN), so if the cardholder is unable to enter the correct code into the terminal then the machine cannot read the chip and therefore authorise the transaction.
The reason for the preference in this system over the old is obvious. Originally, card payments would be authenticated by only the cardholder’s signature after the credit or debit card was swiped and its magnetic strip was read by the terminal.
However, this method could easily be bypassed by fraudsters simply by forging the signature; all they’d need to do was steal the card. A PIN is much harder to obtain and therefore a much securer measure against fraud.
Of course, that is not to say the system cannot be beaten and there are several schemes by which fraudsters attempt to take advantage of careless retailers. Nonetheless, there has also been much progress in furthering safe transactions and your acquiring bank will take you through the relevant measures to your business when you join.
